Potatoes

Chaque année, elles étonnent et enchantent gourmands et gourmets

Which vegetable is small, tender, with a slightly sweet taste and is eaten in May and June only? 

 

The potato, but not any potato...

We are talking of the potato from Île de Ré, the only one to have been granted the AOP certification.

Over 150 hectares, about thirty market gardeners produce between 2,000 and 2,500 tons so that they can value quality.
In 2009, a new packaging has accommodated them: a blue wooden box, in the shape of an oyster hamper and bearing a modern logo.

 

May that market gardeners and restaurant owners gather to celebrate their arrival
on the occasion of the Régalades organised in the island. Connoisseurs can sample
them in the various restaurants displaying all their imagination and creativity to
cook them. But it is also possible to discover them while following a circuit by bike,
visiting a marshland, a  eld or vineyards, with sampling breaks organised by market
gardeners. If their  esh is sweet, it is because they are picked before they are
fully ripe and therefore starch is not formed yet; if their  esh is salty, it is because
they are cultivated in a sandy soil full of sea air. Each year they surprise and delight
all gourmets.

The  first potatoes are the long awaited and looked for.

So it is on the first Sunday of May that market gardeners and restaurant owners gather to celebrate their arrivalon the occasion of the Régalades organised in the island.
