Discovery history and cultural activities in Saint-Martin-de-Ré
The village of Saint-Martin-de-Ré no doubt has the richest history of any village on the Ile de Ré. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2008, and is above all famous for its Vauban fortifications. The ramparts, the citadel, the two town gates and the old Place d'Armes all form part of these defences, built at the end of the 17th century on the orders of Louis XIV.
