Eco-responsible actions

The Ile de Ré is an exceptional natural area. To preserve its beaches, forests, salt marshes and unique biodiversity, everyone can take action on a daily basis. Here are some eco-actions you can take during your stay and throughout the year to help protect the environment on the island.

Favour soft mobility

With 138 km of perfectly laid-out cycle paths, the Ile de Ré is a cyclist’s paradise. Leave your car behind and take advantage of an accessible and practical network of shuttles and buses. Use the island’s soft mobility services:

Limiting the use of cars means improving air quality and reducing noise pollution.

Support local producers the pleasure of short circuits

In the 10 villages, discover authentic produce, lively markets and unmissable specialities. A real treat for the taste buds, whatever the season. Eating locally means :

  • encouraging the local economy
  • limiting our carbon footprint
  • enjoying fresh, seasonal produce
  • From potatoes and oysters to pineau, salt, fish, fruit and vegetables, the island has something for everyone.

Meet our producers and discover their authentic know-how.

Respect nature take photos, only leave fingerprints

The island’s flora and fauna are discreet… but everywhere! When hiking, in the forest or on the beach: stay on the paths, observe without disturbing and leave the environment intact.

Protect fragile natural areas

The natural environments of Rete – dunes, marshes, foreshore, forests – are sensitive all year round. Adopt good habits:

  • Use authorised paths to reach the beaches.
  • Respect nesting areas and protected environments.
  • When out walking, keep to the marked paths.

Sort your rubbish even on holiday

All the villages on the Ile de Ré have sorting and collection points. Many beaches have tide bins where you can dispose of the rubbish collected along the shoreline. A small gesture for you, a big gesture for the planet!

  • A civic gesture: one walk = one piece of waste

A small gesture can have a big impact, especially near beaches.

Preserving the Ile de Ré, means passing it on to future generations.

Thank you for taking care of this unique territory.

Thanks to your eco-actions, the island of Ré will remain a living and preserved place for the children of today and tomorrow.

Other advice and essential eco-actions

Smokers: do the right thing

  • Never throw your cigarette ends in the sand, in the street, in the woods or out of a car window
  • Use a pocket ashtray or a beach ashtray
  • Please note: since 1ᵉʳ July 2025, smoking has been banned on all beaches along the French coastline

Cigarette butts pollute the oceans for a long time and can cause fires in the natural environment.

Preserve water resources

Fresh water is precious on the island, so remember to :

  • take showers rather than baths
  • limit the use of beach showers
  • avoid letting the water run unnecessarily
  • don’t over-water plants
  • run appliances (dishwashers, washing machines) full.

Reduce your electricity consumption

  • turn off unnecessary lights
  • use air conditioning and heating sparingly
  • don’t heat with windows open
  • unplug chargers and appliances on standby when you leave the house
  • use the timers available on certain appliances
