A unique terroir between land and sea

Wine-growing on île de Ré dates back several centuries, benefiting from a favourable oceanic climate and soils that are ideal for vines.

In 1951, the Coopérative des Vignerons de l’île de Ré was set up to structure and promote local production, enabling winegrowers to pool their efforts and produce quality wines under the same banner.

Over the years, independent winegrowers such as Domaine Arica have also set up on the island, enriching the range of wines on offer with a variety of artisanal productions, offering a wide range of wines, from white to rosé to red, while promoting the terroir of the Ré region.

The vineyards of the Ile de Ré benefit from an exceptional terroir, where the mild, sunny climate of the Atlantic Ocean combines with a soil rich in sand and limestone. These conditions, combined with the iodised air, give the island’s wines a distinct personality, marked by a beautiful minerality and remarkable freshness.

The winegrowing profession: a passion and ancestral know-how

Being a winegrower on the Ile de Ré means living to the rhythm of the seasons and the vines. Each stage, from working the soil to pruning the vines, requires meticulous attention and specific know-how. The proximity of the ocean also requires special management of the vineyards: the sea wind, salt spray and temperature variations mean that winegrowers have to keep a constant eye on their plots.

The winegrower’s work is also a real work of patience. After months of care, the grapes finally reach maturity towards the end of summer. This is when the most eagerly awaited phase begins: the harvest.

The grape harvest: a key moment

The grape harvest on the Ile de Ré is a unique and festive occasion, where tradition and modernity meet. Depending on the estate, the grapes may be picked by hand or mechanically, each method having its own advantages. Harvesting by hand allows the bunches to be carefully selected, guaranteeing optimum quality. Mechanical harvesting, on the other hand, ensures fast, efficient harvesting on larger plots.

Once the grapes have been picked, they are transported to the cellars where the winemaking process begins. Here again, the winemaker’s expertise comes into play: pressing, fermentation, ageing in vats or barrels… each stage is crucial to revealing the full potential of the grapes and creating wines that live up to expectations.

A gustatory journey through the cellars of Ré

Visiting a winery on the Ile de Ré is a real taste experience. Various cellars open their doors to visitors for tastings, allowing them to discover all the richness of the local wines: from the fresh, fruity white, ideal with oysters, to the light, thirst-quenching rosé, perfect for summer, not forgetting the elegant reds that are the perfect accompaniment to the region’s dishes.

As you explore the vineyards, you’ll also have the chance to talk to passionate winegrowers who will be delighted to share with you the secrets of their trade and the history of their estates.

In île de Ré, many winegrowers are committed to respecting the environment and local traditions. Integrated or even organic farming practices are widespread, and the emphasis is on preserving ecosystems and biodiversity. The winegrowers of Rete are careful to produce wines that respect the land that feeds them and the island’s heritage.

Pineau and cognac from île de Ré: authentic local treasures

The pineau des Charentes and cognac produced on the island are two of the local gems that stand out for their character and authenticity.

Pineau des Charentes, a sweet, fruity aperitif, is made by blending grape must and Cognac. This harmonious blend is then aged in casks, developing complex aromas and an incomparable smoothness. Ideal drunk chilled, it goes wonderfully well with local specialities such as oysters and cheeses.

Cognac from the Ile de Ré is the result of a long distillation process and ageing in a unique maritime environment. This setting gives the eaux-de-vie a subtle minerality and salinity that are typical of the region’s products. Milder than other cognacs, it is appreciated for its perfect balance between finesse and strength.
