Guided tours of the church of Saint-Étienne by the association of friends of the Ars-en-Ré church
Volunteer guides from the Association ‘Les amis de l'église d'Ars-en-Ré’ will be giving these tours as part of the European Heritage Days.
Guided tour of the Romanesque architecture of the Church of Ars-en-Ré.
Saint-Étienne: between Saintonge Romanesque and early Gothic
The Church of Saint-Étienne stands out for its original architecture, harmoniously blending Romanesque and Gothic styles.
Its Romanesque portal, typical of the Saintonge region, is a fine example of this, with its sober volumes, decorated arcades and finely crafted sculptures.
Inside, the ribbed vaults still feature Romanesque decorations that bear witness to the architectural transition between the two styles, in an atmosphere imbued with spirituality and elegance.
