“I wonder what would become of theater without mystery and fear. How could we live in a world where fear no longer existed? And what kind of theater could we perform in a world where mystery no longer existed?”
In this unfinished letter, presented as the continuation of a dialogue with Louis Jouvet, characters from novels and plays accompany Charlotte Delbo through the different stages of her journey to Auschwitz and back. What connections and what strength did art and literature bring to this young survivor? Staying alive, ‘affirming her being, seizing herself in an extreme effort of consciousness to ensure her existence in the face of ghosts that wanted to absorb her, to engulf her’. As Louis Jouvet's secretary, Charlotte Delbo was present when the master rehearsed texts from the repertoire or passed on his art to young followers; she saw and heard Alceste, Electra and many others... these spectres who reappear here with an intoxicating power of love.
