Through the characters of Poussin, Porbus and Frenhofer, these passages explore the central themes of the work: artistic creation, painting techniques, the tension between ambition and transcendence, and the relationship between master and disciple. Balzac combines the themes of aesthetics, eroticism and death. He illustrates the mysteries of creation by portraying the artist as a fantastical character...
