Bois-Plage beach accessible by crossing the dune via a passageway
Among the beaches in this commune, Bidon V beach stands out for its unusual name. Accessible from Les Gollandières, it is located at the end of a wooden footbridge overhanging the dune.
The name ‘Bidon V’ dates back to the post-war years, but its origins go back a long way. In the past, this beach was called ‘single pieds’ or ‘cingle pied’, depending on the version, because of the biting wind or a narrow path. After the war, the owner of a restaurant on the dune named his establishment ‘Bidon V’ in homage to the Algiers-Niger trans-Saharan route. This relay station, famous for its water reserve marked by empty barrels, was a strategic point in the Tanezrouft. Bidon V was also an important camp and a resting place for travellers. The name has stood the test of time, anchoring the exotic Sahara in the collective memory.
