The island of Ré has had the honour of welcoming three Presidents of the Republic on official visits: Sadi Carnot, Félix Faure and François Mitterrand.
On 19 August 1890, Sadi Carnot travelled to La Rochelle to inaugurate the new port of La Pallice. The following day, accompanied by several ministers, he boarded the aviso L'Élan and headed for the port of Saint-Martin. He then continued on to La Couarde, then Ars-en-Ré, his main stop, where he toured the town to the cheers of enthusiastic crowds. The visit concludes with a lunch in a restaurant near the Baleines lighthouse, to which all the island's mayors are invited. Although an ascent of the lighthouse had been planned, it was cancelled because the meal was undoubtedly too copious. The presidential motorcade left the island aboard L'Élan, anchored nearby.
In 1891, to commemorate this event, the church square in Ars-en-Ré was renamed Place Carnot. In 1895, following the assassination of the President, a bronze bust (which has since disappeared) was erected in his memory on the same square.
