Come and admire the Vinaterie house
Built between the 15th and 17th centuries in the rue Merindot in Saint-Martin-de-Ré, the Maison de la Vinaterie is a half-timbered building with half-timbering, decorated with vines, carved wooden panels and red shutters. The house has three storeys plus an attic and a cellar.
Another notable fact is that the exterior woodwork is decorated with grapes, a small addition by one of its owners, an Alsatian by the name of Paul Natter, probably in the XIXᵉ century, as a tribute to wine and the vine, which was very present on the island at one time. The house would have served as a warehouse for bottles of wine, obviously as a house, and also as a place for collecting taxes.
Privately owned, the Maison de la Vinaterie cannot be visited, but it is possible to get close to it from the street.
