Discover the medieval-inspired market in La Flotte
Before this market was built, there was one in the streets of La Flotte. It was organised in an anarchic way, with no real rules. Above all, some people didn't like the fish stalls staying under their windows for too long. This led to public health and traffic problems.

So, in the 19th century, it was decided to build a place dedicated to this local institution. The space was then built around a central square and modelled on medieval markets with their arcades, wooden stalls and hollow tiles. In 1805, the market was inaugurated on land that had belonged to a certain Achille Dechézeau, who received an income from it until 1884, when the land officially became the property of the commune.

It's a lively market every morning of the year, with a large majority of food products sold on the square. There is also an unpacking area in the car park next door. However, going there in the afternoon doesn't detract from its architectural charm.

It's one of the village's must-sees, and has even helped to make it one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, as well as being voted the most beautiful market in Charente-Maritime in 2024.
