Discover the Chaumes pyramid
Built, according to some sources, around 1824 but installed in 1866, it is located 600 metres east of the Baleines lighthouse. Approximately 4.55 m high, with a base of 1.50 m, the structure is made of masonry and whitewashed. The top, known as the capital, is made of grey granite. This colour contrast between white and grey/black allows the monument to serve as a landmark for sailors.
In addition to its use as a marker at sea, the Pyramide des Chaumes was installed at the request of Charles-François Beautemps-Beaupré, an engineer, cartographer and hydrographer. Thanks to this installation, he and his team were able to produce navigational charts that are still used as references today.
