Discover the church of Saint-Clément-des-Baleines
The church at Saint-Clément-des-Baleines was built between 1842 and 1843, before the official creation of the parish in 1844. The initiative was launched by Abbé Jean Bobard, curate at Ars-en-Ré, who financed the project by raising funds in France and South America. The work was carried out by Pierre Pentecôte and Emmanuel Pathouot.
In 1847, the bell tower collapsed and was rebuilt by the Roche architect Ernest Massiou. The church combines neo-Gothic and neo-classical styles, with a façade featuring a central door and pediment. The interior features a black marble tomb altar with pink marble decoration and votive offerings in glass boxes with painted backgrounds donated by Alexis Pinaud in 1865 and 1869.
