The Church of St Etienne

For over a thousand years, the faith and determination of the people of Ars-en-Ré have built, embellished and renovated this highly original church. It includes three churches: Early Christian, Romanesque and Gothic, which are interwoven in an astonishing continuity. After the vicissitudes of wars and centuries, here it is - more beautiful than ever - after a recent renovation.

The octagonal Gothic spire rising to 43 meters probably dates from the mid-17th century. It is built on the 12th century Romanesque square stone bell tower and was painted in its distinctive black and white in the 19th century.

Tours of the church are organised by volunteer guides, members of the Association des amis de l'église d'Ars . An English language tour at 10.30 every Wednesday in July and August and by arrangement at the same time in June and September, by messaging 07 62 64 07 46.

Look forward to seeing you!
