Come and discover the church of Saint-Eutrope in Les Portes-en-Ré
The church of Saint-Eutrope, located in Les Portes en Ré, was founded in the 16th century, when the parish of Les Portes was created. It is architecturally modest, but contains some precious 17th-century treasures, including an antique altarpiece and a tabernacle. In 1548, the Bishop of Saintes established the parish under the patronage of Eutrope. The original chapel, enlarged in 1610, was destroyed during the Wars of Religion in 1629. At the end of the 17th century, thanks to the generosity of the family of Matthieu Gaillard, a merchant from Les Portes, extension work was financed, including the construction of a bell tower. During the Revolution, the church was stripped of its furnishings, and some items were sold. In 1925, the parish priest MOULARD, a painter in his spare time, painted a fresco above the choir depicting Saint-Eutrope entering paradise. In 1998, the commune restored the church thanks to a donation.
