Founded in 1998, the Friends of the Fortifications association set itself the goal of ensuring the protection, preservation and enhancement of the ramparts of Saint-Martin de-Ré. For more than 20 years, we have therefore been pursuing local actions to enhance and promote Vauban's military architectural heritage, in order to publicize his work and the history of the island in the century of King Louis XIV. Classified as World Heritage by Unesco in 2008, the citadel of Saint-Martin is indeed one of the most beautiful testimonies of an island retreat preserved in the state, and we organize every summer in its ramparts shows for all audiences, which involve inhabitants and tourists, to share its history. We also organize guided tours and actions of maintenance, brush clearing or pedestrian marking. Every year, we participate in the different themes of Heritage and Country Days and we contribute to the educational enhancement of the site by installing an orientation table and historical panels. Renamed VAUBAN FORTIFICATIONS in 2017, our association is continuing its commitments and working to bring the history of the ramparts of Vauban to life with the public.
