5 villages are taking part in an innovative new community project on the island in December.
Le Saint Georges in La Flotte is hosting the first of a series of ‘taster sessions’ for the Language Café Ile de Re on the 2nd December starting at 10am. Sue Dudill, a permanent resident, native speaker and CELTA qualified teacher of English, mobilised a group of retais volunteers to help her create this opportunity.
The main objectives are:
to practise your speaking and listening skills in your preferred foreign language - crucially in a safe space for learning
to get out and about across the island, network and meet new people
to discover and learn something new perhaps
And, the anticipated outcomes? A greater self-confidence, improved language skills and the satisfaction of knowing that you are a truly active European citizen who participates, contributes and engages with the community.
The very best thing is that participation is free of charge. We just ask that you buy refreshments from the establishments who have kindly agreed to welcome us.
How can you be a part of this project?
by mobilising yourself and attending the language cafes in all the different villages
by pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone, speaking another language and by sharing the knowledge you already have with others present
by offering to facilitate a language table - simply a passion for the language and the ability to keep the conversation alive will be enough. We are quite sure this will happen all by itself but someone on hand 'to stoke the fire' would be great! Spanish, Italian, German and more!
On the 6th, 9th 13th and 16th December, the doors are then open at the Café du Commerce in Ars, the Bar a Quai in La Noue, the Place des Delices in Loix and L’Insolite in St Martin, respectively.
All ages are welcome. This is an excellent opportunity for intergenerational learning, developing mutual understanding and greater tolerance. Sue is also an international youth work trainer in the European Programme, Erasmus+ Youth. We especially welcome young people to take part - the more, the merrier!
