  • The exhibition Painting the Prison aims to highlight the artists of the prison and their creations, too long reduced to simple illustrations of a little-known prison system.

  • Press articles, literature, films, documentaries, photographs... Since the 19th century, the prison world has been as intriguing as it is repellent. In this popular interest in crime and its punishment, the colonial penal colony (1852-1938) occupies a particular place.
    A source of spiritual escape or an expedient for the prison condition, creation in detention then appears as a necessity.

    Through sixty works, this exhibition hopes to bear witness to the creative genius of the artists of the penal colony, the diversity of human trajectories and to illuminate the part of humanity of these punished men of which the system had deprived them.
