Tribute to Joel Thézard (1884-1957).
On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the disappearance of Joël Thézard, the museum pays homage to this exceptional artist.
This Niortais who had as a drawing teacher in high school, Jules-Lucien Giraudeau native of Ars, spend much of his time painting the places he frequents during his life.
After having himself become a drawing teacher, he has an intense activity. He does not just draw, paint and sculpt: he writes books, illustrates books and establishes his own publishing house Artes tuae.
The selection presented at the museum reflects the multiplicity of his talents. The route begins with painted oils in his youth and then in the manner of a trip, reveals the landscapes crossed by the artist: from the Charente coast to the island of Ré via more distant lands, from Norway to the countries Mediterranean.
This discovery continues with the presentation of sculptures, posters and publications by Joël Thézard.
Many watercolors testify to his years spent in his home in Saint-Martin. it remains easily recognizable with its carved skull and hippocampus on the facade.
This exhibition of more than 60 originals was made possible thanks to the complicity of the descendants of Joël Thézard.
Hanging done thanks to the support of the Friends of the Ernest Cognacq Museum.
