  • Fort la Prée is the oldest military fort of the island. Discover it with your family or friends.

The site of La Prée was a landing pier between La Rochelle et Ré until the middle of the 19th century and the location of the first royal fortification in 1626.

Since it was a major work for the reconquest of the island from the English army in 1627, the fort was a link in the encirclement strategy of La Rochelle planned by Louis XIII and Richelieu. This was the only military building maintained immediatly after the vistory over La Rochelle in 1628, this eminent example of fortification dating from the beginning of the 17th century was partly razed according to Vauban's wish in 1685, only the keep and the original seafront façade being preserved.

Please note that the monument is closed on saturday and each week end from 18th may to the end of september(for privatization). Please contact us for further information.

Last admission 45 minutes before the closing times of the site.
