The first tower, built under Vauban and in service from 1682 to 1854, is a listed historic monument. It was restored between 2005 and 2007.
The lighthouse is 500 m from the pay car park. A free shuttle bus leaves from the car park during the summer months. It takes you within 300 metres of the entrance to the lighthouse and its garden.

At 57 m, it is one of the highest in France, with 257 steps to climb for an exceptional view of the island and the ocean! This giant of the Retais has a range of 50km, making it one of the most powerful lighthouses on the Atlantic coast.
