Come and discover the Campani and Toiras gates, the historic entrances to Saint-Martin-de-Ré
The fortification of Saint-Martin forced Vauban to adapt his buildings to the existing urban fabric. The Campani gate, located on the road to La Couarde, was moved to the left because of a pre-existing street. The street linking the Place d'Armes to the Porte de La Flotte was modified in 1692 to make it easier for troops to pass through. A half-moon defends these gates, which are linked by movable bridges that were transformed into standing bridges in the 18th century.
The gates at La Couarde and La Flotte feature royal decoration, with a crowned portrait and warrior trophies. The vaulted passages are protected by clerestory casements and organs for defence. Finally, two gatehouses flank the entrance to the town.
