View the Chancardon lighthouse from the Ile de Ré
In 1913, work began on the flagship Chanchardon project between La Couarde, 4 km away as the crow flies, and Ars-en-Ré. Work was slowed by the war and began in earnest in 1916. It was not until 1919 that it was fully completed.
18 m high and automated, it had a range of around 20 km with its white light and around 15 km for its red light, which signalled danger. In 1905 alone, before it was built, there were 4 shipwrecks in the area. It was therefore urgent to install a beacon powerful enough to signal the location.
It is black with a white stripe, and bears the name of the reef.
You can't visit it, but you can see it from the beaches of La Couarde or Le Bois-Plage.
